SALT & Hustl is SALTY's surf and strength retreat in El Tunco, El Salvador, built around one private villa complex, daily coached workouts, a walkable surf town, and a rotating chef program that turns dinner into a nightly surprise. Dates, prices, rooms and the coach line-up are on the retreat page: https://www.getsaltyretreats.com/retreats/el-salvador-fitness-retreat.
What this retreat feels like
This trip runs hot on food and movement, with a walkable surf town right outside the gate. Days move fast between a workout and a wave, then a meal from whichever chef is cooking that night, and the villa itself becomes the centre of the week. It sits toward the higher-energy end of the SALTY lineup, with plenty happening after dark, so plan to rest when you can and drink water like it matters.
Who it suits
This retreat suits guests who want real strength and conditioning work built into a surf trip, and who like a compact, walkable town where staying in or heading out are equally good options. Food lovers do well here too, since a different chef cooks every night. It also suits anyone who has been curious about El Salvador and wants people on the ground who already know it well. Solo travellers land in a tight group fast, since the whole private complex belongs to the group for the week.
This trip suits you less if you are after beach-resort anonymity and a buffet, or a fully restorative, low-key week. If a slower, quieter pace sounds better, our Costa Rica retreat runs the calmest week we offer.
The setting
El Tunco sits on El Salvador's Pacific coast, a compact surf town built around one of the most consistent right-hand point breaks in Central America. The beach here is volcanic black sand, and the town itself is a short, walkable strip you can learn by day two. The retreat takes over Mar de Flores, a private villa complex a few minutes from the water, with several connected buildings, multiple pools, a full on-site gym, and a rooftop for sunrise yoga, all booked exclusively for the group.
What makes this trip different
The villa buyout is the headline. Instead of a shared hotel, this retreat takes over an entire multi-building complex, so the group has the run of it for the week. A different local chef cooks through the trip, which keeps every dinner different. Midweek, a local chef runs a hands-on pupusa-making class before the patio turns into that night's celebration. There is also an inland day trip to Tamanique Waterfall, with a swim and the option to jump.
Surf, if you want it
Surfing on this trip is entirely optional. The point break sits a short walk from the villa, and local instructors run lessons for every level on-site. Plenty of guests spend the week working out and exploring the town instead of ever picking up a board.
Getting there
You fly into San Salvador, and El Tunco is about 45 minutes away by road, one of the shortest airport-to-beach transfers on any SALTY retreat. Land in the afternoon and you can be watching the sunset from the villa rooftop before dinner. SALTY coordinates the group transfer on the retreat's official arrival and departure days, so you're not sorting out a taxi on your own. Airport codes, transfer windows and the full rules are in Airport Transfers.
A sample day
Mornings open with sunrise yoga on the rooftop, then breakfast back at the villa. Late morning brings the day's main group workout, blending strength in the gym with conditioning out on the patio. Afternoons are yours: paddle out for a surf session, claim a spot by one of the pools, hit the gym, or wander into town. Evenings bring dinner from that night's chef, then either a walk through El Tunco or a quiet night back at the villa.
Frequently asked questions
Is El Salvador safe? El Salvador is safe to visit and easier to travel in than most people expect. The country has changed a great deal in recent years, and El Tunco in particular is an established surf town with steady tourism and a walkable main strip. We work with local teams on the ground and share practical safety notes in your pre-trip documents.
Do I need to know how to surf? You do not need any surf experience to come on this trip. Plenty of guests spend the week training and exploring the town instead of paddling out. If you do want to try, local instructors run lessons for every level, easy to book once you land.
What's the deal with the Group rooms? The Group rooms on this trip are built for friends who want to share a room and split the cost, and every guest in that room needs to book at the same time to hold it. Our Room Types guide has the full rundown on how each tier works.
Do I need a visa for El Salvador? Most North American and European passports do not need a visa for a stay under 90 days here. Check your own country's requirements before you book, and look for the full details in your pre-trip documents.
What makes this different from other SALTY surf retreats? The private villa setup sets this trip apart. Instead of a shared hotel or lodge, the whole group takes over a multi-building complex with its own pools and gym, paired with a rotating chef program that changes dinner every night of the week.
