Travel Guide: Sicily

Best time to go, getting there, safety, entry rules, and what to expect on a SALTY Sicily trip.

Planning a SALTY fitness retreat in Sicily? Here is what you need to know about the island's southeastern coast before you book your flight.

Best Time to Go

For beach weather, June through September is the window, and August is peak everything, with the warmest water and full Ferragosto energy. That's deliberately when SALTY goes. If you want Sicily at its most alive, that's the window. Shoulder months are quieter and cooler, which is lovely, but it's not really the point of this trip.

Getting There

Fly into the airport named on the retreat page. For Sicily that means Catania, on the island's east coast, well connected through hubs like Rome and Milan. It's about 90 minutes from the retreat property. SALTY arranges transfers from Catania, so your only job is landing.

Safety

Southeastern Sicily is relaxed, family-oriented beach territory, and the towns you'll visit, Marzamemi, Noto, and Siracusa, are established tourist destinations. You're with a group and SALTY hosts throughout, and transfers and excursions are arranged for you. Standard travel sense covers the rest. If you have any concern before you fly, message us and we will talk it through.

Entry Requirements

Sicily is part of Italy, so EU and Schengen entry rules apply, and Sicily has its own requirements set by those rules. Your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date. Check your government's travel site before you fly, since rules vary by nationality.

Currency and Cards

Sicily's currency is the euro. Cards are widely accepted in restaurants and beach clubs, though small cafes and market stalls in towns like Noto and Marzamemi may prefer cash.

Weather in August

Expect hot, sunny days at the height of summer, with warm Mediterranean water, exactly the conditions Ferragosto is built around. Evenings stay warm too, so pack for long outdoor dinners.

Food

It's Sicily. Lunches at the beach club sit on the sand, seafood and pasta are done properly, aperitivo hour is practised as the Italians do it, and there's street food in Siracusa and a pizza night people still bring up months later. Meals are a core part of this trip, not fuel between workouts.

Water, Surf & Swimming

This is the beach-and-culture trip, not the surf trip. The Mediterranean here is for swimming and floating, with daily beach club access and sunbeds set up so recovery happens right on the sand.

Culture

Within a short drive of the retreat you'll find Marzamemi, a fishing village turned golden-hour snack stop, Noto's UNESCO-listed baroque streets, and Siracusa, where Greek ruins, Roman history, baroque piazzas, and gelato all share a postcode. Mount Etna smokes gently in the background on the drive down from the airport.

What to Pack Extra

Beyond the standard SALTY packing list, bring a nicer outfit for hosted dinners and comfortable walking shoes for the baroque-town day trips. See "What to Pack for a SALTY Retreat" for the full list.
