Tide Is Rising is SALTY's most adventure-forward retreat, spanning misty tea country, a safari day, a Galle Fort day trip, and a full week camped on Sri Lanka's south coast. Dates, prices, rooms and the coach line-up are on the retreat page: https://www.getsaltyretreats.com/retreats/sri-lanka-fitness-retreat.
What this retreat feels like
This trip moves through the country instead of sitting still. The highland leg slows everything down, then the coast speeds it back up with daily surf and a full property buyout. It is one of our smaller, more intimate groups, built for guests who want to actually get to know a country beyond its beach.
Who it suits
This retreat suits guests who want to see more of Sri Lanka than one beach town, whether you are brand new to surfing or experienced and craving a variety of breaks. It also suits solo travellers who want a built-in, close-knit group, and anyone who wants both adventure and comfort without needing five-star luxury.
This trip suits you less if you want one property to settle into for the whole week, or a resort-heavy, amenity-driven stay. For that pace, our Costa Rica or Morocco retreats sit closer to what you are picturing.
The setting
The retreat spans two very different regions. The trip opens in Ella, in Sri Lanka's central highlands, with tea estates, scenic train routes, an eco lodge, and cooler mountain air. From there the group heads south, stopping for a safari through Udawalawe National Park, before settling on the south coast in Ahangama for the rest of the week, where the retreat takes over the entire property for the group.
What makes this trip different
The two-region format is the core of this trip: hills first, then coast, connected by a proper overland journey and a safari day in between. On the coast, the group has full exclusive use of the property, right down to a private beach volleyball court. A full day in Galle Fort, a Dutch-colonial old town by the sea, breaks up the surf-and-sweat rhythm midweek.
Surf, if you want it
Surfing is a core part of this trip's coastal week, with a structured lesson package that takes you from your first pop-up through several days of in-water instruction, plus board rentals for the whole stay. No experience is required, and plenty of guests start the week as complete beginners.
Getting there
Everyone on this trip needs to land in time for one of a small number of scheduled shuttles from the airport, since the group travels to Ella together. Our Airport Transfers guide has the shuttle times and what to do if your flight lands outside them. You will also need a low-cost electronic visa before you fly, and our Visas and Travel Insurance guide walks through how to apply.
A sample day
Mornings start with sunrise yoga, then a group breakfast. Late morning is surf time on the coast leg, or a hike or cultural outing on the highland leg. Afternoons bring lunch on the beach and free time to explore or shop locally. Evenings mean a Sri Lankan dinner together, often followed by a bedtime yoga session or a night out with the group.
Frequently asked questions
What's the surf like? Ahangama sits on Sri Lanka's south coast, with several beginner-friendly breaks within easy reach and warm water year-round, so no wetsuit is needed. The included surf package covers every level, with board rentals for the full week.
What skill level do I need to surf? No prior surf skill is needed for this trip. Most SALTY guests on this retreat start as total beginners, and the included lesson package is built for exactly that, while more experienced surfers can step up to a faster track with the same instructors.
Is Sri Lanka safe for solo travellers? Sri Lanka is one of the safer destinations in the region for solo travellers, and the group moves together with logistics handled throughout, so you are rarely navigating anything alone unless you want to. We share practical safety notes in your pre-trip documents.
Can I extend my trip before or after? Yes, many guests add extra days in Colombo, Kandy, or around Mirissa and Yala for more wildlife and whale watching. We are happy to help you think through the logistics once you book.
Do I need to be in great shape for this trip? No particular fitness level is required to join this retreat. Every workout is scalable, and surfing rewards timing over strength. The only real requirement is being able to swim and walk comfortably.
